Songfacts®:

  • With a bubbling, synthetic bass beat, "Get Down" was a popular club track in the early '80s, and a precursor to freestyle dance music. It was written by the Jamaican producer King Sporty (Noel Williams), who had moved to Miami and started his own label, Konduko. Sporty, who co-wrote the Bob Marley song "Buffalo Soldier," was one of the first to develop the Miami bass sound.
  • The subject matter of this song is pretty clear:

When I make love to you
You'll feel it through and through
  • King Sporty originally released this song in 1979 (as "Get On Down") with his group King Sporty & the Roots Rockers. When he found himself in the studio with the male vocalist Connie Case, he had him record a new version of the song, this time with more electronic elements and less disco. This is the version that became a club favorite.
  • The producers HiFi Sean and Shalvoy covered this song in 2017 with Andre Espeut on vocals. They made a video for the song using footage Sean recorded from New York public access TV in the '90s.
