Songfacts®:

  • Boy George was brought up a Catholic but became a follower of Nichiren Buddhism, a branch of the Eastern religion which is based on the teachings of the 13th-century Japanese Buddhist priest Nichiren. This song about his religious faith was influenced by Massive Attack's track "Teardrop."

    My name is the messenger
    My name is the truth
When it feels like the love is cold
Wanna shout it from the roof

He told The Sun: "In that song they say, 'love is a verb, love is a doing word' and it's always stuck in my head. I learned something from that song."

George added that back in the 1980s and 90s, if he found himself in a bad mood when he went on stage, he would make sure everyone else went through the pain as well. But he is now a changed man and he endeavors to make sure the audience "go home literally with a smile in their hearts."
