Songfacts®:

  • "Starlight" finds Dave celebrating his life's wins while repping his South London roots and flexing his wealth.
  • Dave also raps about his girlfriend, who he's blissfully fallen for. He's happy to show her love in full view.

She a ten out of ten on a bad day
Public affection, I tell her, "Come kiss me"

And wants her to be emotionally dependent on him.

    I like mine obsessed, clingy
If she don't miss me, miss me
If she don't miss me, history
If she don't miss me, it's a mystery
  • The song title comes from the first verse when Dave recalls a short Caribbean break. Because there was less smog than London, the rapper could see more stars in the sky at night.

In Jamaica, quick vacation, traveling my pastime
Nuff pollution in the ends, I flew back yard cah I wanna see starlight
  • Dave raps his bars atop Norwegian singer Angelina Jordan's 2017 hummed rendition of the 1954 standard "Fly Me To The Moon." Dave references the cabaret staple when he raps:

Fly me to the moon, let me get some space
Seein' them stars on her private story
  • The self-produced song's intro features a reversed line from Angelina Jordan's version of "Fly Me To The Moon."

Uoy evol I, sdrow rehto ni

"Starlight" ends with the same line, this time in its proper form.

In other words, I love you
  • Directed by Nathan Tetty alongside Dave himself, the video takes place at a luxurious apartment. It cuts back and forth between Dave delivering his bars at home with some friends, and shots of models. The rapper wears various Corteiz designer outfits throughout the visual.
  • "Starlight" debuted at #1 on the UK singles chart. It marked Dave's second UK chart-topper, following 2018's "Funky Friday" featuring Fredo.
  • The song's visual was the most played music video on YouTube in the UK in 2022. Bad Boy Chiller Crew's "BMW" was the second most popular video on the platform, followed by Harry Styles' "As It Was" in third place.
