Songfacts®:

  • "Sings" is a musical snapshot of two people wrapped up in a fleeting moment of closeness. We hear David Gilmour gently implore his partner to "hold back the news" and "stay inside this cocoon," a plea to remain ensconced in a small world, away from the demands and distractions of the outside.
  • The lyrics, penned by Polly Samson - Gilmour's wife and longtime collaborator - reflect a longing to shut out the noise of the world, a sentiment the pair are intimately familiar with. "We're terribly addicted to the news," Gilmour confided to Mojo magazine. "And we're usually in bed by 5 to 10 most nights. But during that time, there was only one news, really – COVID, and watching (the UK's chief medical officer) Chris Whitty and the same people day after day."
  • Gilmour describes the music as matching the lyrical content, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere that complements the idea of being wrapped up in a "cocoon."
  • The title "Sings" stems from an old recording of Gilmour's son, Joe, when he was 2 years old. The little guy can be heard chanting, "Sing, Daddy, sing."

"He's about six feet now and 29 years old," Gilmour mused to The Sun in 2024, adding, "I wrote and composed what became the chorus for 'Sings' back in 1997. I was in the sitting room, strumming a guitar and playing a little chord sequence onto an old MiniDisc. Joe was in the room, just singing, as children do. We found it very charming and affecting."
  • "Sings" is part of Gilmour's Luck and Strange album, which was recorded over five months in Brighton and London. David Gilmour produced it along with Charlie Andrew, known for his work with ALT-J and Marika Hackman.
  • Luck and Strange explores themes of aging and mortality. "Sings" fits into this broader thematic framework, reflecting on life's precious, intimate moments in the face of transience.
