Songfacts®:

  • This was the third single released by Christian hip hop/alternative rock group dc Talk's fourth studio album, Jesus Freak.
  • In the mid-1990s dc Talk were arguably the most popular Christian rock group on the scene and when Jesus Freak was released, it achieved the highest first-week sales of any Christian release in history. This put the three group members under enormous pressure. Dc Talker Michael Tait recalled to CCM Magazine Presents: The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music that they were being inundated at every performance by "youth pastors that said, 'My kids love you guys!' and moms that said, 'Please don't mess up.'" The trio felt a crushing sense of responsibility that made them feel vaguely uneasy. Tait continued "It's not that I was shirking my responsibility. I know 'to whom much is given, much is required.' And we were all doing our best. But what kept going through my head was, What if I stumble? What happens to your faith then?"
Dc Talker Toby McKeehan and songwriter Daniel Joseph expanded on that thought, and penned a song that was not only a reality check for the successful trio, but their fans as well. Tait said: "I feel like kids are living in extreme days, extreme times and you really have to touch their hearts and reach them where they are. So we tried to address them honestly with issues we were all going through."
  • This was #1 for six weeks on Christian Radio.
  • On the Jesus Freak album, just before this song begins, a quote from the friar and author Brennan Manning can be heard.
  • Jesus Freak won the 1996 Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album and the 1996 Dove Award for Best Rock Gospel Album.
