Songfacts®:

  • "And The Address" is the first track on the first album by Deep Purple. Co-written by lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and keyboard wizard Jon Lord, a single one-sided sheet of the basic music was lodged with the British Museum Library for copyright purposes shortly after it was written. This sheet which contains the direction "AD-LIB SOLO" also claims copyright for B. Feldman & Co trading as HEC Music of London, 1968.
  • This fiery instrumental was also the first track the band played at their first live gig, April 20, 1968 at Kastrup, Denmark. After their Danish tour, they recorded the album at Pye's Marble Arch Studios, London, over a long weekend in May. It was produced by Derek Lawrence. The studio version of "And The Address" runs to 4 minutes 38 seconds, and set the pattern for Deep Purple instrumentals and vocal tracks, with Lord and Blackmore sharing lengthy solos which in live concert would be stretched out considerably. >>>
