Songfacts®:

  • This instrumental is basically a guitar solo, Ritchie Blackmore making beautiful noises with his instrument without the slightest trace of exhibitionism. Any Deep Purple aficionado who had not previously heard it would undoubtedly credit it to Deep Purple Mark I, but it was actually recorded for the 1984 Perfect Strangers album by the revamped lineup from Deep Purple Mark II with Roger Glover on bass and Ian Gillan on vocals.
  • Who was the son of Alerik? Well, Alaric I was King of the Visigoths, but according to the Urban Dictionary, Alerik means "To pretend to do something. To pretend to work hard on any given day" with the continuation "Erik and Alex have been aleriking here for years."

So where does the title come from? When you can play this well, who cares?
  • The full version of this song runs 10:01, which was too long for the Perfect Strangers album, but when the album was reissued on CD in 1999, it was added as a bonus track. The song first appeared on a 12" single in 1984 along with the song "Perfect Strangers"; an edited version was used on the 7" single. >>
