Songfacts®:

  • This two-part song is part of Deep Purple's Come Taste the Band album, the only one released with the Mark IV lineup of David Coverdale, Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Glenn Hughes and Tommy Bolin (Ritchie Blackmore had departed). "This Time Around" is a lament to a lost love sung by Hughes; "Owed to 'G'" is an instrumental piece.
  • Rock legend Jon Lord died July 16, 2012. At the Royal Albert Hall tribute concert held on April 4, 2014, this song was introduced and sung by former Deep Purple bass player Glenn Hughes who said it was the only one the two men ever wrote totally together, and that it was very special. Nearly 40 years on and at this celebration of Jon's life, it took on an entirely new meaning. >>

  • Astronomy from UsaI’ve heard that the G is for Gershwin
  • Vic Lessard from Cambridge Ontario , Canada I think that this song bleeding into owed to g was absolutely brilliant. John Lord really displays his maturity on the keyboards . The timing and chord structure has a magical melodic mood and the vocals are perfectly places in context with it. Tom Bolin did a stellar job sitting in place of Blackmore. Coverdale was also a great addition to Deep Purple . I’m Sure Ian and John took great Pride in the restructuring of the group after finishing that album . That’s a tough act to follow . Job well done indeed !
