Wrong Man

Songfacts®:

  • According to Michael Heatley in The Complete Deep Purple, this song was inspired by Wayne Williams, "a man imprisoned under dubious circumstances." Ian Gillan appears to believe in his innocence and would introduce it as such in concert, but can it really be said that the case of Wayne Bertram Williams became a cause célèbre?

Williams was convicted of two murders on February 26, 1982, but is believed to be responsible for many more. The Atlanta Child Murders was a series of perhaps as many as 29 killings. One possible victim was a young girl; all the rest were either boys or young men, and all were Black.

Though it remains to be seen if Williams was responsible for all the murders, the evidence against him was compelling.
  • Credited to the full band - Don Airey, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Steve Morse and Ian Paice - "Wrong Man" is the third track on the Rapture Of The Deep album. >>>
