Songfacts®:

  • "She Hates Me" is what happens when country music, self-deprecation, and an astonishing lack of romantic foresight collide. Dierks Bentley delivers a rollicking tale of a man whose dreams of rekindling an old flame crash and burn with spectacular precision. The problem? Well, everything. She hates his hair. She hates his dog. She hates his truck, his music, and, presumably, his very existence.

"I love any opportunity to laugh at myself - especially my younger self," Bentley said. "And 'She Hates Me' definitely provides that."
  • Bentley co-wrote the track with Ashley Gorley, Ross Copperman, and Chase McGill during a writing camp. It began as a playful joke, a song Bentley didn't intend to release, let alone take to radio. But sometimes the best litmus test for a hit is whether your own children start belting it back at you with unsettling enthusiasm. "I didn't take it too seriously until my kids started singing it back to me," Bentley told Taste Of Country Nights's Evan Paul, "and then the friends I sent it to kind of freaked out about it."
  • Jimmy Allen and Wesley Scantlin of the rock band Puddle of Mudd also receive writing credits because "She Hates Me" interpolates their 2001 song of the same title.
  • The video depicts Bentley trapped in a looping nightmare, wandering through a vandalized home that reflects his failed romantic aspirations.
  • Bentley released both the song and video on Valentine's Day 2025. He purposely chose the date as a gleeful middle finger to a holiday he dislikes.
  • The anti-love song fits nicely with other humorous love-gone-wrong songs in Bentley's catalog, such as "Drunk on a Plane," "Somewhere on a Beach" and "What the Hell Did I Say." This time, however, the ex isn't just unhappy, she completely despises him.
