Songfacts®:

  • The superstar songwriter Diane Warren wrote "Gonna Be You" for the movie 80 For Brady, based on the true story of four women in their 80s who are huge Tom Brady fans. They head to Tampa for the 2021 Super Bowl so they can see him play with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but have to figure out how to get into the game.

The song is all about friendship, which aligns with the theme of the movie. "It's gonna be you that comes to the rescue anytime that I'm drowning," the chorus goes.
  • Dolly Parton is joined on this song by Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauper, Gloria Estefan, and Debbie Harry. Diane Warren assembled this dream team when she decided that because the movie is about women in their 80s, it would be fun to have superstars from the '80s on the song. Warren wrote Carlisle's hit "I Get Weak" and Estefan's "Live For Loving You."
  • 80 For Brady stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno and Sally Field - Tom Brady also makes an appearance. Dolly Parton has a long history with Fonda and Tomlin, who were her co-stars in the movie 9 to 5.
  • The music video, directed by Alex Ogus, combines footage from the film with each singer performing in a Tom Brady jersey.
  • Cyndi Lauper explained why she jumped on board. "This was such a great project to be part of because it was nice to be able to join forces with my pals for the song," she said. "Each of these women mean a lot to me. Friendships between women are important and I think Diane's lyrics captured that. It was really touching. You don't often see female 'buddy movies' so this was fun."
