Songfacts®:

  • Don Felder was a guitarist with the Eagles from 1974 until he was ejected from the group in 2001 over a business dispute. The year after the group went on hiatus in 1982, he released a solo album called Airborne. His next solo album wasn't until 2012 with Road to Forever; Don says he spent a lot of time between albums with his family.

"Girls In Black" was one of 12 songs he selected from 26 ideas he came up with. He told us: "I have a particular personal weakness for blonde haired women in black attire. There's a striking, eye catching allure to blonde hair and black gowns or heels. Not the goth look. But it's a striking combination for me.

So when you drive around in Los Angeles, you see that look on just about every other street corner. It's a very popular look for myself, as well as probably every other guy in town. So I thought instead of limiting the song lyrics to just blondes in black, I should write the lyric to include the other two thirds of the female populace, which is brunettes and redheads. So I changed it to girls in black. I thought it was kind of broadening my interest base there to change it from blondes in black to girls in black." (Here's our full Don Felder interview.)
