Songfacts®:

  • Drake sings here about people who show fake love simply because he is a successful artist. They pretend to be his friends, but they really just want to reap the fruits of his hard work, even taking his place.
  • I've been down so long it look like up to me
    They look up to me
I got fake people showin' fake love to me

The first line of the chorus was originally used by blues musician Furry Lewis in his 1928 song "I Will Turn Your Money Green." It goes:

I been down so long 'cause it seem like up to me
I been down so long, seem like up to me
Woman, I love hard like a rock in the sea

It is not clear whether Drake borrowed the line from its original source or from folk singer Richard Fariña's 1966 novel Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me and its 1971 film adaptation. He may even have taken it from Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood's 1968 song "I've Been Down So Long (It Looks Like Up To Me)."
