Songfacts®:

  • Dream Theater covers some heavy material on their Distance Over Time album, notably on "Pale Blue Dot," where they ponder our place in the Universe. "Viper King," though, is about a car: a Dodge Viper.
  • Lead singer James LaBrie wrote the lyric, which is about "the spirit of having a love for something, whether it's a hobby or a sport."

In a Songfacts interview with LaBrie, he talked about how he finds adventure. "I love cars, but actually my adrenaline rush is downhill skiing," he said. "I love to ski mountains and stuff like that. But I also love vehicles."
  • In writing the lyric, LaBrie was inspired by some other famous songs about vehicles, notably "Red Barchetta" by Rush and "Highway Star" by Deep Purple. "'Viper King' has a little bit of those overtones and a very Van Halen kind of feel, as well," he told Songfacts. "I just wanted to write about the thrill of driving down the road and letting your spirit free, enjoying the ride."
