This song is from Barbie: The Album, the soundtrack to the 2023 movie Barbie.
The first live-action adaptation of the iconic Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel, the film takes viewers on a journey alongside Barbie herself. As she awakens to the imperfections of her life, she embarks on an adventure to find happiness in the real world, accompanied by her beloved partner, Ken. It draws inspiration from Mary Pipher's 1994 non-fiction book, Reviving Ophelia, which examines the effects of societal pressures on American adolescent girls.
Atlantic and Warner Records released "Dance The Night Away" as the soundtrack's lead single on May 25, 2023.
As well as providing the lead single, Dua Lipa also has a cameo appearance in the film playing a mermaid variation of Barbie.
"Dance the Night" is an anthem that embodies the spirit of dancing through the night, transcending sadness caused by a turbulent romance. Dua Lipa sets the stage on the first verse, already captivating the dance floor. As the verse unfolds and temperatures rise, the "
Levitating" singer shrugs off the challenge effortlessly, declaring her ability to withstand the heat and shine brilliantly.
Lipa's romance may have encountered obstacles along the way, but as she surrenders to the music, none of that matters. Every relationship faces turbulence and trials, but when the night arrives, tears have no place in her world of dance and celebration.
On the hook, Dua's endurance allows her to dance throughout the night, unaffected by any emotional turmoil. No matter how much her heart may ache, she conceals it with an unwavering facade. She keeps the party alive, ensuring that not a single strand of her impeccable appearance is disturbed.
Dua Lipa wrote "Dance The Night" in collaboration with Norwegian songwriter Caroline Ailin, and with Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, both of whom composed the music for the film.
Mark Ronson slid into Lipa's Instagram DMs to bring the song to life. According to a screenshot he shared after the song's release, Ronson expressed his excitement to the singer about working on the
Barbie movie and praised its hilariously clever script. "There's a song with a huge 60 person dance number with the whole cast – I only have the track so far, as they started rehearsals, but I would f–king love it if you would consider co-writing and starring on it," he wrote. "I honestly think the movie's going to be incredible."
Lipa and Ailin previously collaborated on the pop star's hit songs "
New Rules" and "
Don't Start Now."
Ronson and Wyatt joined forces with the French production duo Picard Brothers to craft the track. Together, they blend their skills to create a production that exudes a disco-inspired sound reminiscent of Dua Lipa's 2020 album, Future Nostalgia.
Wyatt plays bass and synthesizer while Ronson adds his signature touch on guitar and Rhodes piano. The Picard Brothers contribute keyboards and programming with the song's engineer, Brandon Bost. Ailin also contributes backing harmonies. Cello, violin, and viola players enhance the disco-pop track's instrumentation.
The vibrant Barbie-inspired video takes place in a dazzling pink set. Dua Lipa embarks on a journey of discovery as she learns new choreography amid the aftermath of a fallen disco ball that was meant for the shoot. Undeterred, she fearlessly dances atop a colossal Barbie heel, capturing the essence of the moment.
During a lively disco party, the film's lead actress, Margot Robbie, along with co-stars Emma Mackey and Issa Rae, add a touch of star-studded glamour to the scene. After the disco festivities, Barbie writer, director, and executive producer, Greta Gerwig admires Lipa's captivating performance. Questions arise about the circumstances leading to the disco ball's unfortunate demise.
Moreover, the video is a platform for Dua Lipa to showcase several pieces from her clothing collection, "La Vacanza," a collaboration with the renowned fashion icon, Donatella Versace.
Greta Gerwig needed a disco song that would be heard during Barbie's house party as the centerpiece of a big dance sequence between the various Barbies and Kens. She sent Ronson a playlist of '70s and '80s dance-pop music to let him know what she had in mind. Ronson and his colleague Andrew Wyatt created a backing track that Gerwig loved and used for the cast's dance rehearsals. That track would later become "Dance the Night."
"I didn't want to make the Barbie song too bubble-gummy or something that would have been really obvious,"
Ronson told Billboard.
Dua Lipa claimed her fourth UK #1 single when "Dance The Night" climbed to the top of the Official Singles Chart dated August 27, 2023. It followed the singer's previous three UK chart-toppers: "
New Rules" (2017), "
One Kiss" with Calvin Harris (2018) and "
Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)" with Elton John (2021).
"Dance The Night" earned Grammy nominations for Song Of The Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media, but voters preferred a different song from
Barbie: "
What Was I Made For?" by Billie Eilish, which took them both. Lipa was the first performer of the night; she sang "Dance The Night" along with "Training Season" and "
Houdini."
