Songfacts®:

  • This is a track from Endlessly, the second studio album by Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy. All songs on the record were written and produced by Duffy and veteran songwriter Albert Hammond ("When I Need You," "The Air That I Breathe," "It Never Rains In Southern California .")
  • Duffy told Q magazine how she hooked up with Hammond: "He made contact around the time of the Grammys a couple of years ago when he saw me on telly. I was a bit alone at the time - life was a bit big and scary - and he told me had a song titled 'Don't Forsake Me,' and it felt like he'd come up with a title for my life."
  • Duffy told The Daily Mail how she and Hammond collaborated on this song: "We met and had a drink, but I wasn't taking in what he was talking about," she said. "He was rambling on. Then he mentioned a song, Don't Forsake Me, and the title stuck. I immediately wanted to write it with him. So, the next night, I went to his house in LA. His wife made me a cup of tea and told me she liked the way I dressed. She said I wasn't like 'those girls on MTV in their bikinis.'
But, after Albert played me the song, I went away and wrote my own melody. He couldn't believe I had the audacity to rip his song apart, but it had to be a reflection of my life."
  • Endlessly has the theme of love. Duffy told The Sun newspaper: "The topic of love doesn't have to be sexual or about a love relationship - it can just be about the way people interact. I've waited a long time to sing Don't Forsake Me, which is a polite way of saying don't let me down."
