Songfacts®:

  • "Guilty Of The Crime" first appeared on the soundtrack to the 1994 TV series Robocop, which lasted just one season. This original version was sung by Joe Walsh, Frankie Miller, and Nicky Hopkins and written by Miller and Jerry Lynn Williams, who wrote some songs for Eric Clapton, including "Forever Man" and "Pretending."

Joe Walsh also wrote and sang the theme song to the series along with Lita Ford, and recorded another song for the soundtrack called "Fire and Brimstone." Around the time he got involved in the project, he reunited with the Eagles, whom embarked on their highly profitable and well-received Hell Freezes Over tour in 1994.

The reunited Eagles didn't release a studio album until 2007, when the issued Long Road Out Of Eden. Most of the 20 songs on the double album were written and sung by Don Henley and Glenn Frey, but Walsh sang lead on two songs: this one and "Last Good Time In Town," which he wrote with J.D. Souther.
  • There aren't many copies of the Robocop TV series soundtrack floating around, but Long Road Out Of Eden sold 7 million just in America. The song has a rootsy feel that fits in well on the album and is one of the many Eagles songs dealing with matters of the heart: He's guilty of the crime of loving her.
  • The original 1994 version was produced by longtime Eagles producer Bill Szymczyk, who worked on the Long Road Out Of Eden album but in a diminished role, as Henley and Frey did much of the production themselves.
