Fido Simply Said "Bow Wow"

Album: not on an album (1910)

Songfacts®:

  • American lyricist Edgar Leslie collaborated with English composer Horatio Nicholls to write the first truly international song, "Shepherd Of The Hills," and the top song in America in early 1928, "Among My Souvenirs," which went on to become a truly massive international hit. Composer Al Piantadosi co-wrote "I Didn't Raise My Boy To Be A Soldier," the first commercially successful anti-war song. Put these two greats together and you get...a stupid novelty song with a split infinitive in the title.

Leslie's excuse is that this was early on in his career, shades of David Bowie and "The Laughing Gnome."

For what it is worth, this dodgy doggy doggerel was published by Leo Feist of New York in 1910. It remains to be seen if anyone had the temerity to record it. >>
