  • Eels frontman Mark Oliver Everett told The Sun that though "Sweet Scorched Earth" masquerades as a love song, it probably wouldn't exist if Donald Trump hadn't become president. He explained: "It's a love song but will the protagonist and his partner survive a world where 'there's poison in the hearts of cheerless men'?"
  • Everett explained to Billboard the track is about how two lovers can try to act as a shield against all the crap going on around them. "That song is about is that it's gotten so bad that's not even enough," he said. "Love isn't all you need in this case. Things are so bad you need more, [although] I don't know what you need now."
