Songfacts®:

  • The Deconstruction was the first Eels studio album since the birth of frontman Mark Oliver Everett's first child, Archie. The title track, like many of the songs, was inspired by the singer's young son.

"To me, it's about tearing down the defenses we build," Everett explained to The Sun. "We spend most of our lives building walls but what's underneath, what are we protecting?"

"One of the things about having a kid is that you see pure innocence and beauty," he added. "You know it's a s--t show from there on but how do you protect that sweetness? We're all so vulnerable. I don't think anybody is born a 'bad seed', it's what you do after that and a lot of us are dealt a bad hand."
