Songfacts®:

  • This is a song about needing and depending on God. We can stand on His faithfulness because He is the "Same God," yesterday, today and forever.

"He is unchanged in His wisdom, His power, His goodness, and His generosity toward us," explained Elevation Church worship leader Chris Brown. "I hope the song portrays His character and nature in a way that takes people on a journey and reminds people that we're a part of a great cloud of witnesses that have seen this same faithful God make good on His promises to the generations before us, and those to come after."
  • Chris Brown co-wrote "Same God" with Elevation lead pastor Steven Furtick, Bethel Music's Brandon Lake, and Houseflies lead singer Pat Barrett. It features Elevation Worship's Jonsal Barrientes on lead vocals and Brandon Lake on background vocals.
  • Elevation Worship recorded "Same God" for their 10th live album, Lion. They released the piano ballad as the first promotional single from the record on January 21, 2022.
  • At 8:01, the album version is too long for radio. Elevation Worship released an edited version as the second single from Lion on June 17, 2022. It peaked at #1 on both Billboard's Hot Christian Songs and Christian Airplay charts dated January 21, 2023. Only three times has an act led both surveys at once, and Elevation Worship boasts the last two such doubles. (This song and "Graves Into Gardens"). Mandisa's "Overcomer" was the first song to achieve the feat back in 2013.
