Songfacts®:

  • In this song, Eric Hutchinson finds a girl who could be "the one." He spends much of the song expounding on her charms, but then reveals the twist: he's already taken.

    She could be the one
    If I didn't have you
  • Hutchinson hashed out this song with his touring band, The Believers: Elliott Blaufuss, Ian Allison and Bryan Taylor. All them have a writing credit on the track along with Hutchinson.

"That's a song I had kicking around for a long time and it never felt right," Hutchinson said in a Songfacts interview. "I never had the right perspective on it, and for whatever reason, it popped into my head when I was getting ready to make this album. And it fell under the umbrella of Modern Happiness: It's about monogamy and responsibility."
  • Hutchinson draws parallels between this song and his 2003 hit, "Rock and Roll," because "they're both about trying to be your best self while drunk at a bar somewhere." They are also misinterpreted if you don't listen to the lyrics: "Rock and Roll" is about a couple who live a rather soulless existence that is mostly played out in bars.
  • The video was directed by Erica Dasher and shot in Santa Monica, California. It stars Jade Catta-Preta, who had a recurring role on the TV series Californication in 2014.
