Songfacts®:

  • First Aid Kit wrote "Turning Onto You" for their 2022 album Palomino. The track is in marked contrast to the Swedish sisters' previous record, 2018's Ruins. That project charted the aftermath of Klara Söderberg's devastating breakup with her English boyfriend, singer-songwriter Jo Rose.

    Oh, I can't help it, I confess
    I'm turning onto you
'Cause you got me hanging on

Having moved on from her heartbreak, Klara set out to write a happy love song with her sister Johanna. "The line 'turning onto you' is cheeky and fun," Klara told the UK newspaper The Sun. "When we were younger, we wouldn't have been able to own that idea, but I love the song and its soul vibe."
  • First Aid Kit recorded "Turning Onto You," along with the rest of Palomino, with Swedish producer Daniel Bengtson at his Studio Rymden in Stockholm. Bengtson is a friend of the sisters' musician-turned-teacher father Benkt Söderberg.
  • To achieve the old-school country soul sound First Aid Kit wanted for the song, Bengston bought is some extra musicians. He hired Goran Kajfês and Per Johansson to arrange the brass section and jazz drummer Moussa Fadera to create the laid-back groove. Bengston played the slide guitar, bass and Wurlitzer.
  • First Aid Kit named their album after the Palomino horse. With its gold coat and white mane running free, the Palomino served as inspiration for the sisters as they sought to escape from the dark times of the previous few years. "To us, it symbolizes freedom and moving forward," they said. "Like the imagery of the Palomino riding off into the unknown, we hope these songs will give you inspiration and solace wherever they find you."
