Songfacts®:

  • Five Finger Death Punch reunited for the song's music video with director Nick Peterson, who also helmed their "Coming Down" and "The Wrong Side of Heaven" clips. The visual sees multiple storylines playing out, all focused around the pain and grief involved in overcoming and moving on from emotionally entangled difficult situations. The various scenarios involve teenage runaways, drug abuse and domestic violence. Guitarist Zoltan Bathory stated:

"In life everyone has a nemesis… it can be anything… a self-defeating thinking pattern, a bad habit, an addiction, an adversary… something or someone that puts you in an impossible scenario, where you are presented with a fork in the road. Sometimes there is no other choice but making a hard choice. You can give up and just suffer the situation, or you can use your pain to overcome it, as pain is truly the wind in the sails of change. We wanted to present a story about moving on, a story that probes and questions compassion and loyalty. Those are beautiful notions, but remember you have to be loyal and fair to yourself as well, so will you sacrifice yourself for another or will you live with the guilt that you didn't."
  • The word "Nemesis" meaning someone or something's downfall is Greek. The literal meaning is "retribution" from nemein "give what is due."

Nemesis was the Greek goddess of divine retribution against those who succumb to hubris (arrogance before the gods). She rewarded virtue and punished the wicked and all kinds of impiety, hence the use of her name for retributive justice generally.

  • Bryce from North DakotaI know the pain of not being there for someone when they need you the most. I had decided my best hope of getting my life together was to go to Job Corps. So I packed my things up and moved to the campus four hours away from my friends and family (currently still at Job Corps). My family doesn't have the money to come and get me for a weekend so I couldn't go home. About a week and a half after I got here my mom called me. My friend and my brothers roommate committed suicide. I'm angry at him for feeling it was his only option and I'm angry at myself for not knowing that he was in pain.
  • Branden from Orange Park, FlThe song always gives me the feels when watching the video because I been through what the boy went through.. it sucks we all face problems like this.. because you can give people everything but get nothing back. no matter what though you'll always be there for people even if no one is there for you.. you can always make others happy then yourself being happy when you know everything is s--t.
