Songfacts®:

  • Five for Fighting is the stage name of the California singer-songwriter John Ondrasik. This song is the first single from his fifth studio album, Slice.

The song finds him assessing the odds of a successful lifelong relationship, and determining that while chances are it won't work out, it's still worth a shot.

In our interview with Ondrasik, when we asked what inspired the song, he replied: "The importance of 'failure.'"
  • The album's title was selected from a number of fan submissions to Ondrasik earlier in 2009. Other titles he considered included "Note To Self" and "Shift Change."
  • This was the end-title song for the Sandra Bullock film The Blind Side. "I always wanted to be in a sports film," avid fan Ondrasik told Billboard Magazine, "so when they told me about (The Blind Side) and I heard the story and everything I thought, 'Wow, the song almost sounds like it was written for the film.' (The producers) were saying to me, 'Be aware this is a little, indie film. We don't have many expectations for it.' Nobody had any idea it would become what it is... bigger than Rocky. The highlight for me is that for the next 20 years people will be able to hear the song in that film and have it be part of that experience."
