Songfacts®:

  • Five for Fighting is the stage name of US singer-songwriter John Ondrasik. This song is the title single from his fifth studio album. Ondrasik co-wrote the song with Godspell and Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz.
  • This harks back to when a single song, Don McLean's "American Pie," was able to unite an entire society. "'Slice' is for those of us who remember the day we all used to sing the same song," Ondrasik explained to Billboard magazine. "We'll see if the lyric is something that can transcend the masses or if just something like folks over 40 relate to it."
