  • When Fletcher (the singer-songwriter Cari Fletcher) caught Taylor Swift's Eras Tour at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey in May 2023, she got a surprise: Her ex, Shannon Beveridge, was also at the show. Fletcher and Beveridge have a long history. They started dating in 2016 just as Fletcher's music career was getting off the ground. They were on-again, off-again over the next four years but kept it all under wraps until 2020 when Fletcher released an EP called The S(ex) Tapes that pulled back the curtain. Made while they were quarantined together but broken up, the EP came with videos directed by Beveridge that showed lots of passion still flowing between them.

After quarantine they went back to their lives and stayed friends until 2022, when Fletcher put out her album Girl Of My Dreams with the single "Becky's So Hot," a song about finding out Beveridge was seeing someone else. This drove a wedge between them, but when they ran into each other at Taylor Swift's concert, they shared a warm embrace that quickly showed up on TikTok. This encounter inspired the song "Eras Of Us."
  • Fletcher and Beveridge are big Swifties, and for Fletcher, there was something quite karmic about running into her at a Taylor Swift show. Swift has written her share of songs about the complicated relationships with her ex-lovers, some of which took on new meaning for Fletcher as she and Beveridge had their ups and downs. It didn't take long for Fletcher to realize there was a song brewing.

"Once I started feeling all these feelings and realizing that we were both at this concert scream-singing the lyrics to an artist that has narrated so much of my journey, of my falling in love, of my breakups, and both of us there in agonizing pain yelling these songs at this artist that is just so incredible, 'Eras Of Us' hit me as I was at the Eras Tour," she told Entertainment Tonight. "I went to the studio the next day and I was like, 'This has to be a song. You don't run into your ex-girlfriend at a Taylor Swift concert and not turn it into a lyric. It came from a reflection in a positive light and also just a way for me to close a chapter. It felt like this full-circle moment."
  • Just as Taylor Swift's Eras Tour takes us through different stages of her career, "Eras Of Us" is a journey through the different chapters in Fletcher's relationship with Beveridge, starting with when they first got together in 2016 and were living on different coasts, Fletcher in New York and Beveridge in Los Angeles. It progresses through their turbulent but deeply passionate times and ends with that meeting at the Eras Tour when all their history got distilled into a quick hug and some small talk.

Fletcher and Beveridge hashed things out a year later on Beveridge's podcast, where they took a deep dive into their history together and seemed to get some closure as friends.
  • "Eras Of Us" was the lead single from Fletcher's second album, In Search Of The Antidote. She wrote the song with the songwriter Kinetics (Jeremy Dussolliet) and her producers, Jennifer Decilveo and One Love (Timothy Sommers).
