  • A re-imagined version of Frank Ocean's boyhood, he wishes himself "Godspeed" on his journey into manhood here over a heavenly organ groove.
  • Houston, Texas gospel singer Kim Burell provides the background vocals. One of the most influential voices in the genre, Kim Burrell has been hailed by many as the "Queen of Gospel." Ocean wrote a short essay in 2010 on Tumblr concerning his personal views about religion, in which he shared a clip of Burrell singing her song "Home."
  • In Blonde's companion magazine Boys Don't Cry, Ocean wrote:

"I wrote a story in the middle – it's called 'Godspeed.' It's basically a reimagined part of my boyhood. Boys do cry, but I don't think I shed a tear for a good chunk of my teenage years. It's surprisingly my favorite part of my life so far. Surprising, to me, because the current phase is what I was asking the cosmos for when I was a kid. Maybe that part had its rough stretches too, but in my rearview mirror it's getting small enough to convince myself it was all good. And really though… It's still all good."
  • James Blake's 2015 The Colour In Anything track "Always" borrowed from this song, a year before its release. Blake told Entertainment Weekly at the time, "It's an interpolation of a song that he wrote that hasn't come out yet. It was nice of him to let me use it."

As well as this song, Blake also collaborated with Ocean on the Blonde tracks "Solo" and "Solo (Reprise)."
  • Frank Ocean gave the song its live debut during his headlining show at the Coachella Music Festival on April 16, 2023, his first live performance since 2017. Ocean's set received criticism from both fans and music critics alike for not being live-streamed on YouTube, as most other performances from the festival were. It also disappointed fans that no merchandise was available, and many felt that Ocean's effort during the performance was lackluster, particularly considering he had not performed live in six years. Ocean canceled his second scheduled appearance at the festival, citing a leg injury.
  • Mavis Staples released a cover of "Godspeed" in June 2025. Her version ends with a spoken-word outro by Youth Poet Laureate and folk artist Kara Jackson.

Brad Cook, known for his work with Bon Iver and American Aquarium, produced the track.

"I loved Blonde when that record came out," said Staples. "That first line in 'Godspeed' of 'I will always love you' just crushes me every time I hear it... or sing it. It's just such a beautiful song and he sounds amazing on it so I was a little nervous if we could pull it off. I was honored to sing his words."
