Songfacts®:

  • This is a version of the show tune standard "The Lady is a Tramp," featuring new lyrics by Sammy Cahn.
  • The song was recorded by Sinatra on The Beatles' Apple label, and its claim to fame is that it was the first song to be catalogued by the newly set-up record company. ("Hey Jude" was the first release on Apple, but it wasn't given a catalogue number). According to Tony Bramwell's book, Magical Mystery Tours, this private recording by Sinatra was awarded Apple 1 status before being given to Ringo Starr's first wife, Maureen Starkey, at a party to celebrate her 22nd birthday. Despite being among the world's rarest records, it is available for internet download in MP3 form.
