Songfacts®:

  • The third single dropped by French Montana from his MC4 album finds him boasting about his luxurious lifestyle over Noah "40" Shebib and Murda Beatz's pounding, bass-heavy beat. However the rapper warns his girl that they won't be splashing out on expensive fur coats as it's "all about the mula."
  • French Montana recruited Drake to spit the second verse. It is the third collaboration between the Coke Boy leader and the Toronto rhymer following "Pop That" and Rick Ross' "Stay Schemin'."
  • Drake aims his rhymes at rap rival Joe Budden, calling him a "one-hit wonder."

    Pump, pump, pump it up
She got a good head on her, but I pump it up
I'm not a one hit wonder, they know all my stuff
You let me turn into the ni--a that you almost was
    .

Joe Budden had a Top 40 hit with "Pump it Up" in 2003, which Drake interpolates here, but his commercial career stagnated thereafter. Budden's beef with Drizzy began in May 2016 after he dissed the Toronto MC's Views album, saying that he sounded "real f---in' uninspired." After Drake responded with some subliminal references in "4AM in Calabasas," Budden released diss tracks "Making a Murderer Pt. 1" and "Wake."
  • Though the diss references to Joe Budden appear to be pretty clear, French Montana claimed that the New York rapper wasn't on their mind in the studio. "I don't think we did that record thinking about Joe Budden," he told MTV News. "It's not that I don't think — I know that for a fact."

Montana said the pair were thinking about, "Drinking, having fun, enjoying life, and just making a record about that."

He added; "I don't think we was in there thinking about anybody. I don't think we ever went in the studio with negative energy, talking about somebody. We just work and have fun."
  • The song's music clip was directed by Dominican/Puerto Rican hip-hop video director Spiff TV, né Carlos Suarez. It was shot at Drake's pre-Summer Sixteen tour vacation spot, Casa de Campo villa in the Dominican Republic. Spiff told Billboard magazine:

"We wanted to do something different. With me, French and Drake, there's a lot of association with the Latin world. For some reason, everybody thinks Drake's Dominican and that French Montana is Puerto Rican. We wanted to give that vibe and show the world that Dominican Casa de Campo energy.

We did a skit, too, making fun of the Spanish side. They always call Drake 'El Draque' and there's all these memes of him dancing bachata. It's just a fun party."
  • The song featured in the Season 3 premiere of Empire in which French Montana guest starred as Vaughn. The episode was aired on September 21, 2016.
