    Joe Budden had a Top 40 hit with "Pump it Up" in 2003, which Drake interpolates here, but his commercial career stagnated thereafter. Budden's beef with Drizzy began in May 2016 after he dissed the Toronto MC's Views album, saying that he sounded "real f---in' uninspired." After Drake responded with some subliminal references in "4AM in Calabasas," Budden released diss tracks "Making a Murderer Pt. 1" and "Wake."
  • Though the diss references to Joe Budden appear to be pretty clear, French Montana claimed that the New York rapper wasn't on their mind in the studio. "I don't think we did that record thinking about Joe Budden," he told MTV News. "It's not that I don't think — I know that for a fact."

    Montana said the pair were thinking about, "Drinking, having fun, enjoying life, and just making a record about that."

    He added; "I don't think we was in there thinking about anybody. I don't think we ever went in the studio with negative energy, talking about somebody. We just work and have fun."
  • The song's music clip was directed by Dominican/Puerto Rican hip-hop video director Spiff TV, né Carlos Suarez. It was shot at Drake's pre-Summer Sixteen tour vacation spot, Casa de Campo villa in the Dominican Republic. Spiff told Billboard magazine:

    "We wanted to do something different. With me, French and Drake, there's a lot of association with the Latin world. For some reason, everybody thinks Drake's Dominican and that French Montana is Puerto Rican. We wanted to give that vibe and show the world that Dominican Casa de Campo energy.

    We did a skit, too, making fun of the Spanish side. They always call Drake 'El Draque' and there's all these memes of him dancing bachata. It's just a fun party."
  • The song featured in the Season 3 premiere of Empire in which French Montana guest starred as Vaughn. The episode was aired on September 21, 2016.
