  • On March 23, 2020, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a nationwide lockdown in the UK in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdown, which came into effect on March 26, was the most stringent set of restrictions imposed in the UK since World War II.

Under the lockdown, people were told to stay at home unless they were essential workers, such as NHS staff, supermarket workers, or delivery drivers. Schools, universities, and non-essential businesses were closed, and people were advised to avoid social contact as much as possible.

Gabrille Aplin wrote "Never Be The Same" about her sudden change of circumstances. "It's about being on tour in March 2020," she said to The Sun, "and then the next day I was home and it was lockdown and I suddenly felt like I didn't really know who I was as a person."
  • Aplin wrote "Never Be The Same" with Andrea Rocha, Anna Straker, and Liz Horsman. It was the last song she wrote for her Phosphorescent album, and the only one she didn't write at home. "During 2020, I was writing online with other writers for other artists, and I loved it," she explained. "'Never Be The Same' was the first time we were all physically in the room and writing for my project, and it felt like a full circle moment."
