Stronger Than Me

Album: Fun (2018)

Songfacts®:

  • Garth Brooks debuted this love song at the 2018 Country Music Association Awards. A tribute to his wife Trisha Yearwood, she was sitting in the front row of Nashville's Bridgestone Arena as he performed the ballad. Brooks admitted backstage that he nearly backed out before his big moment because Trisha hadn't heard the tune before and "she's not a big surprise girl."
  • The touching track finds Brooks reflecting on his wife's strength.

You know, I always thought I had to have the answers
Be her strength and take the lead
When it comes to anything that matters
    You're stronger than me

Yearwood told ET's Nancy O'Dell it's the song's final line that means the most to her:

I pray God takes me first 'cause you're stronger than me

Yearwood explained that it reflects a conversation she and her husband have had several times before. "It's like, 'I can't, I hope I go first,'" she said, "and he's like, 'No, I have to go first. I can't. I won't be able to.'"
