Songfacts®:

  • This country rocker tells the tale of smoky dive bars, neon lights and a love interest who only dances to cowboy songs. It was inspired by George Birge's pursuit of his college sweetheart (now wife, Kara) during their days in Austin, Texas.
  • The song was born on February 3, 2023, during a songwriter's retreat at a lake house on Tims Ford Lake. That's in Tennessee, south of Nashville and far enough from the city to feel like the kind of place where creativity thrives because there's little else to do. Birge was joined by Michael Tyler, who co-penned Birge's breakthrough hit "Mind On You"; Matt McGinn ("Bury Me In Georgia," "7500 OBO") and Lalo Guzman, known for his knack for modern country storytelling.
  • The seed for "Cowboy Songs" came courtesy of McGinn, who turned up with the lyrical hook: "She only dances to cowboy songs."

But he wanted the music to feel like the opposite of what you'd expect from such a line. Not twangy and obvious, but something sly, surprising, and modern. Guzman whipped out a track he had stashed away. He thought it might be a bit too left field, but the group latched onto it and Tyler instinctively belted out the hook.
  • The team fleshed out the chorus in record time. From there, they turned their attention to the opening verse, conjuring a vivid barroom scene: our cowboy-in-waiting, armed with a lighter and the woman's favorite drink, stationed at the ready. He doesn't even know if she'll show, but the possibility hangs in the air.

For Birge, the scene came with personal echoes. "Back when I was sneaking into Austin bars with a fake ID, there was always that one girl - magic, captivating the room," he recalled to Billboard. "Everyone's watching her. I thought, 'How do I put that in a song? Who is she? And who's watching her?'"
  • To give his vocals the perfect edge, Birge drank tequila during the recording process. Meanwhile, co-producers McGinn and Guzman spent 17 hours fine-tuning the track's sound, layering it with steel guitar and Dobro to nail the right mix of grit and gleam.
  • If Birge felt the weight of expectations after the success of "Mind on You," writing "Cowboy Songs" was like stumbling onto a secret oasis. "The moment we finished it, I knew," he told Entertainment Focus. "We'd captured something special. Between the energy and the story, it felt like magic." So much so, he built an entire EP around it, also titled Cowboy Songs.
