Songfacts®:

  • This haunting, low-key song of romantic confusion and fear of being hurt has been interpreted many different ways, but Michael revealed the true meaning during the BBC One special for his concert at The Palais Garnier in Paris in 2014, when he said: "I know 'Cowboys and Angels' is one of people's favorites but I don't think anyone could possibly understand what it's about. In reality, it's about a strange love triangle involving a woman who's madly in love with me and a man who I was madly in love with and none of it came to anything, but I got a good song out of it."
  • The song is George Michael's longest single, clocking in at seven minutes and 14 seconds.

  • Diana Allen from Gulf Breeze, florida,usWhose Scar on the face does Michael refer to in Cowboys and Angels song?
  • Steveh from LondonTimeless classic masterpiece from GM, I think LWP is his finest solo work. Every song is a songwriter at the top of his craft. Every creative person wants to leave a legacy, something that has meaning, LWP is indelibly printed on my life. It’s always my go to album. RIP George.
  • Karen M from UkAt the beginning of Cowboys and Angels there is a classical music piano piece, can someone tell me what it is please?
  • Dino Carlucci from UkThe accompanying backing music awesome too. What a singer.
  • Helena from United KingdomThis is a stunning song, and George is one of my favorite artists. This has a sad feeling to it. Reminds me of a lost love, and also reminds me of the loss of freedom I've experienced as a married adult.
  • Victoria Semenenko George Michael's Baby from UkraineGot to say sorry but just found out Dustin Lynch same titled song was released only 2012 despite I do remember that end of 80s did consider that idea of being a girl-like angel who's also sweet as a guy. That means I just kept that idea in my head all these years as there's exactly Victoria Secret's angels for.
  • Victoria Semenenko George Michael's Baby from UkraineThe song was inspired by the same title country song story of American country singer Dustin Lynch as I found its lyrics very authentic as natural describing relationship between a man and a woman.
  • Phiilp from Beer Town, Wiclaudia, the beautiful au paire from austria, i was 28 she was 18 but more mature than many american women. can u remember cruising down south beach in 1990? before the crowds and hi-rises. if u went north of the clevelander it was dark. versace's house was a hostel then!! washington ave was dark and deserted!! it was a moonlit night and we were in my convertivle.....
  • Matt from Portsmouth, United KingdomQuite possibly my all time favourite song, quite underrated and not one of George's more commercial or well known tracks but a beautiful song nonetheless, it conjures up an evocative picture of late night feelings of being together alone. Personally it reaches out to me and the final line is sums up the whole song, 'Please be stronger than your past, the future may still give you a chance'. Twenty years on and I still identify with this song more than probably any other.
