Songfacts®:

  • Gin Wigmore lost her father to cancer when she was 16. She was in Argentina when she was told the tragic news, and she rushed home and penned this song in response to the pain she felt. The young songwriter explained: "'Hallelujah' was my way of telling my family I had dealt with dad's passing and honestly, I didn't want to share these feelings with anyone else. I wanted the moment for myself and my family." (For more, check out our Gin Wigmore interview.)
  • Wigmore won the 2004 US-based International Songwriting Competition with this tune. In doing so, she became the youngest and only unsigned Grand Prize winner in the history of the ISC. According to the ISC, "this intensely personal song reflects a vulnerability and honesty that is both remarkable and stunning. The lyrics, coupled with her unique voice and the song's haunting melody, belie her age and display a maturity of 'an old soul.' The song, which resonated overwhelmingly with the judges, is memorable for its simplicity and beauty."
  • The song featured in the Season 6 finale of the American teen drama show One Tree Hill.
  • This featured on Wigmore's debut EP, Extended Play. Released in 2008, it peaked at #10 in the New Zealand charts.
