Songfacts®:

  • In this equestrian-themed song, Ginuwine is offering up a pony ride to a special lady:

    If you're horny
    Let's do it
    Ride it
    My pony

It's pretty obvious what his "pony" refers to - he's just waiting for her to jump in the saddle.
  • This was one of the first high-profile productions by Timbaland, and the first Top 10 on the Hot 100 on which he got a composer credit. Timbaland made a name for himself producing the Jodeci albums Diary of a Mad Band (1993) and The Show, the After Party, the Hotel (1995). Ginuwine was an associate of Jodeci member DeVante Swing, who made the connection. "Pony" was the first track Timbaland produced for Ginuwine, and it was released as his first single.

With a slinky, vibrating rhythm and lots of trebly percussion, the song sounded nothing like anything else out there. The song went to #1 on the R&B chart and climbed to #6 on the Hot 100, marking the beginning of Timbaland's incredible run of hits producing Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake.
  • Ginuwine and Timbaland wrote this song with Static Major (Stephen Garrett), who was Aaliyah's primary lyricist and also co-wrote Lil Wayne's "Lollipop." He died in 2008 at age 32 during a procedure to treat a rare medical condition.
  • This song earned Ginuwine a deal with 550 Music, a division of Epic. He had another #1 R&B hit in 2001 with "Differences."
  • Directed by Michael Lucero, the video shows Ginuwine performing the song at a roadside cowboy bar.
  • Ginuwine's real name sounds like a Harry Potter character: Elgin Lumpkin.
  • The British production team Tough Love released a remix of this song called "Pony (Jump on It)" in 2015, which went to #39 in the UK. Ginuwine recorded new vocals for this version and also appeared in a new video (directed by Rock Jacobs), where two lovely ladies steal his car.
  • William Singe did a popular cover of this song in 2015. The following year, the retro-jazz singer Ariana Savalas released a slinky version with Postmodern Jukebox. In 2017, it got an EDM treatment when Huntar recorded it with Gucci Mane.
