Songfacts®:

  • "Greed" is about a former friend of the band who lent them money to record the indie version of their first album. He said he didn't want any money back, but the band paid him back anyway along with an additional $10,000 as thanks. This guy then tried to sue them, saying he owned 10% of Godsmack. The song is just telling him off for being ungrateful and putting them through a year of negotiating with lawyers.
  • This is the third and final single from Awake, the band's second studio album. The track peaked at #3 on the Mainstream Rock chart and #28 on the Modern Rock chart.
  • The music and lyrics were written by lead singer Sully Erna.
  • In the music video, directed by Troy Smith (Rage Against The Machine, Blind Melon), the band is tired of living in squalor in their rundown apartment, and they decide to take revenge on their wealthy landlord. The clip also features a cameo appearance by Toni Tiller, the model who graced the cover of their self-titled debut album. (Read the story of how Tiller became the band's unwitting cover girl in the "Whatever" Songfacts entry.)
  • Awake sold more than 2 million copies in America, where it peaked at #5 on the albums chart.

  • Nick from Paramus, NjDon't like it; sounds like a shorter version of Awake, as with a lot of the songs on the Awake album, but what are you gonna do??
