Songfacts®:

  • Grace (Grace Sewell) is a recording artist from Brisbane, Australia with a strong musical heritage (her grandparents toured with the Bee Gees and her older brother is Conrad Sewell who is best known for his ARIA #1 hit "Start Again").
  • The 17-year-old teamed up with American rapper G-Eazy to record a version of the classic pioneering female-empowerment tune "You Don't Own Me." She was the same age as Lesley Gore was when the American teen recorded her original version.
  • The song climbed to #1 in Australia on the May 25, 2015 singles chart. When Conrad Sewell's "Start Again" climbed to pole position four weeks later, they became the first Australian born siblings in the history of the ARIA charts to reach the summit as separate acts.
  • The song received increased exposure in the UK when it was used in the 2015 House of Fraser Christmas advert. It's use in the commercial helped the tune climb into the Top 10 of the singles chart there, a chart placing "You Don't Own Me" had never surprisingly previously achieved.
  • This was produced by the legendary Quincy Jones, who also helmed Lesley Gore's original version.
  • Asked by The Sun why she decided to cover this song, Grace replied: "My manager was at Quincy's house and he played him some of my music. Quincy, who had done the original in the '60s with Lesley, suggested that we remake 'You Don't Own Me.'"
  • The song plays during the trailer for the 2016 anti-hero movie Suicide Squad.
  • The song (without Grace's vocals) featured in a commercial promoting the 2017 Toyota Corolla.
