Songfacts®:

  • Over a minimalist yet elegant instrumentation, Gracie Abrams reflects on the demise of a broken relationship.

So, where do we go now?
    Where do we go now?

Abrams is aware that their love has grown stagnant. Unable to make a decisive move, she tries to persuade her partner to end it by posing the question "where do we go now," although the answer is clear to both of them.
  • Abrams admits to faking her emotions, as she lays bare her true thoughts and feelings. She recounts all the confusion, frustration, and longing that come with a romance that's gone south.

Abrams feels bad about not loving her partner.

It was one-sided, hate how I hurt you
If I could, I'd have changed every feelin
    '

But now she feels his absence.

Guess the space was the thing that I needed
    But I miss you
  • Abrams wrote "Where Do We Go Now?" with Aaron Dessner, who is known as the producer for Taylor Swift's Folklore and Evermore albums.
  • Dessner played synth bass, piano, synthesizer, and percussion. The other musicians are:

    James McAlister: drums, keyboard, synthesizer
Doveman: Wurlitzer electric piano, Mellotron, piano, synthesizer
Rob Moose: piano, violin, viola, orchestra leader
    Ben Lanz: synthesizer
  • The Gia Coppola-directed video shows Abrams wandering alone. Coppola is the granddaughter of the legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and the niece of Sofia Coppola, also a film director. Gia Coppola made her directorial debut with the 2013 film Palo Alto and later directed the 2020 movie Mainstream.
  • Gracie Abrams likely wrote "Where Do We Go Now?" about the end of her romance with songwriter and producer Blake Slatkin. The pair had a long-term relationship that ended sometime before the release of her album Good Riddance in 2023.
