Songfacts®:

  • Singer Billie Joe Armstrong explained to Q magazine May 2009 that "'Christian's Inferno' is like a subway ride to hell and you kind of end up in outer space with this" song. Bassist Mike Dirnt added: "It's the most unapologetic love song."
  • This song is a piano-led number. Armstrong learned the piano before recording 21st Century Breakdown and a lot of the songs were written on it. Bassist Mike Dimt told The Sun April 24, 2009: "There are parts of this record, which are the most melodic thing we've ever written." Armstrong added: "The piano was a new thing for us and I pushed my voice to do things it's never done before. I always hear a guitar symphony in my head all the time. How do you make song arrangements and push them further than they've ever gone before in the rock genre but still have it feel like you just heard a Ramones song? That's why Butch (Vig, producer) worked so well. He helped figure it all out. He's always been on our shortlist, since Nirvana's recording came out. But it was tough. You just have to keep ignoring the voices in your mind, telling you that you suck."
  • Armstrong told Billboard magazine that this "is a love song I wrote for my wife. I wrote it on piano and then sang it. It's one of those things where it's only directed toward one person, like an intimate moment. And you say, 'Wow, I never sang falsetto before, that's pretty cool.'"
  • With the line, "If I lose everything in the fire, I'm sending all my love to you," this song hit hard when wildfires raged through Los Angeles in January 2025. At the FireAid benefit concert, Green Day opened their set with this song, joined by Billie Eilish, a huge fan of the band, on vocals.

  • Phil from Minneapolis,mnI was going through a rough patch in my life. Nothing was going right, I had no clue what was wrong with me. I met this girl Sarah, she was there for me as I went through the dark times. We were head over heels for each other. The problem I have very bad anxiety and kept pushing her away. I chased her away my dark times got darker. I was watching the broadway idiot documentary heard this song and crushes me everytime I hearing it. I sat down and wrote and wrote a short film about us. Everyone that has read it while listening to this song have been brought to their knees. This song and script is everything I have ever wanted to say to her.
She has moved on married with a kid. She will forever be the one. If I lose everything in the fire did I ever make it through? Constantly goes through my mind.
  • Hayes from Newark, OhUsed to be me and her song. *sigh* I'd do almost anything to be with her again. I mean sure, she cheated, but hey, so did I.
  • Amber from Indianapolis, Inhes got such an amazing voice :] some ppl would think that he sucks at singing this kinda stuff but what they dont think about is 1)nothing will ever sound like the album version (only exception to that is WMUWSE. its just the right range for him to sound like the album)and 2)thats a really difficult song for guys to sing. he really didnt have to make it falsetto but he wanted to push his limits. you can really tell that hes not ment to sing falsetto so that just really had to be a hard song to sing for him. 21 guns is the same way. i nvr thought of it how i put it when i first heard them sing it on the AMA's i believe. but they have so much talent and they want to push their boundries and they make it work, so its a win-win for us :]
  • Emily from Dudley, United Kingdomlove this song :)
  • Alan from The Meadow Of Rainbows, United KingdomThis song sorta reminds me of "Warmness on the Soul" by Avenged Sevenfold. Except without the epic guitar solo :(
  • Jakob from Cedar Rapids, IaOne of my favporite songs by Green Day.
  • Krista from Carbondale, PaOne of my favorite songs off the new album and DEF. one of the most heart felt songs ever from Green Day! Genius!
  • Dan Smit from Grand Rapids, MiI love this song. This is my favorite song on their new album, I thought their new album was ok until I heard this song, then I started to like it better. I really wasn't expecting all the piano songs, but was really glad they were in there, I love piano. I love the chord progression is both kind of unusual and common at the same time, if you know what I mean.
  • Michael from Tucson, AzLove this song.
  • Peter from North Bend, WaHands down best love song ever written, well by Green Day at least:) Redundant is also another good one...
  • Joey from Miami, FlI really enjoyed listening to this song when I got the record because it represents the way I've been feeling about a girl lately. This is probably the softest song on the record and another one of the few songs that show Green Day's soft side. Wouldn't be suprised if I hear this song in high school proms to slow dance to with ur partner lol.
