Songfacts®:

  • Inspired by the end of her marriage to Gavin Rossdale and a new romantic relationship with Blake Shelton, Stefani wrote the This Is What the Truth Feels Like album in the space of a few months. This breezy song finds her coming to terms with the end of her relationship and viewing her liberation in a positive light.
  • Stefani's main songwriting partners were Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter. The duo were co-writers of Justin Bieber's "Sorry" and Hailee Steinfeld''s "Love Myself" and they also worked on Selena Gomez's Revival album.

Tranter recalled their collaboration with the No Doubt singer to Genius: "She walked into the room and was just like, 'I don't give a f--k about hits. I don't care about the radio. I'm here to tell the truth.'"

"In the beginning, she didn't really tell us what she was going through. She just said, 'I'm going through a lot. I started writing songs as therapy, and I need that right now. So that's what we're doing, and if you're not going to do it then I suggest you leave.' I thought that was great! You're Gwen Stefani and you want to talk about some real s--t—let's do this!"
