Songfacts®:

  • This hypnotic track finds Halsey and her rumored beau, British singer-songwriter Yungblud, making music together for the first time. The pair swap Auto-Tuned verses before coming together at the chorus as they ruminate over a relationship that was self-sabotaged.

"The song tells the story of a perfect tragedy that reflects modern love within our society," Yungblud explained. "We are so distracted and focused on what's next, we can fail to see what is actually in front of us. We don't realize how much we need something until it's taken away from us."
  • The track is underscored by a high-powered drumming contribution from blink-182's Travis Barker.
  • Halsey, Yungblud and Travis Barker wrote the song along with producer/songwriter Matt Schwartz (Cold War Kids, Kylie Minogue). It was produced by the latter with Zakk Cervini (Good Charlotte, Simple Creatures) and Chris Greatti (Black Veil Brides, Grimes).
  • Halsey and Yungblud performed the song live for the first time at Yungblud's show in Sydney, Australia on February 14, 2019.
  • Speaking with Radio stations 97.1 AMP and 106.7 KROQ, Halsey and Yungblud said their collaboration originally came together in, yep, about 11 minutes. "Something's wrong... it feels too synthesized, it feels too electric," they realized. It was then that Halsey had the idea to add Travis Barker to the track.
  • The cinematic video, directed by Colin Tilley, explores the emotional stages of grief and loss. The visual follows Yungblud repeatedly trying in vain to save his partner Halsey from a car crash. Each time he wakes up, then sets his stopwatch for 11 minutes before giving it another go. The clip is broken up into chapters that represent the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.
  • Yungblud originally had an idea for a song inspired by Brand New's 2006 track about a tragic accident, "Limousine (MS Rebridge)." While drinking beer with Halsey, he told her about it and she said that she'd loved that tune all her life and would love to do something like that with him. The result was this song about star-crossed lovers.
  • Yungblud told iHeartradio that working with Halsey and Travis Barker on the song was a dream. "At the end of the day we're all rock kids," he said. "We grew up with a mutual adoration for the genre so it completely makes sense that we would come together and try to modernize it."
