Songfacts®:

  • Halsey has written several break-up numbers, including "Without Me," about her split from G-Eazy, but had never penned a simple love song. That is until she started dating British rocker Yungblud, real name Dominic Harrison.

"I was dating Dom," Halsey told Beats 1's Zane Lowe. "I was really happy. I was really happy with my life."
She started thinking about the night they met, which is a story she told so many people about. "And every time I told it, it got better and better and better and more romantic and it wasn't raining but like in the story, the streets are shining wet and I was like, I need to tell this romantic story."

So, sitting in her living room at two in the morning, Halsey penned her very first love song with just her voice and a guitar. "It's just a nice song," she said. "It's about feeling safe and like you can trust love."
  • The song tells the story of how Halsey and Yungblud first met in a Los Angeles bar after The New Jersey pop star hit up the British singer.

Your voice is velvet through a telephone
You can come to mine, but both my roommates are home
Think I know a bar where they would leave us alone
And I wonder if you'd take it slow

Halsey and Yungblud began dating in November 2018 and collaborated on the single "11 Minutes." They broke up after 10 months together.
  • Halsey completed the country-tinged, guitar-led vulnerable love song with the help of producer Greg Kurstin. Their other collaborations include her duet with Lauren Jauregui, "Strangers," and the Manic track "You Should Be Sad."
  • The Patrick Tracy-directed video showcases Halsey performing the song on a guitar in two different bar settings. In one, she's singing in a dark, empty bar. In the other, she's performing for an audience all glammed-up in a brightly lit room.
