Songfacts®:

  • Recorded for Harry Styles' Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally album, "Pop" is a sexy, body-focused track about pleasure and connection. Styles told Apple Music's Zane Lowe the album as a whole was built around the question of what music he wanted to feel standing in the middle of a dance floor, having spent considerable time in the nightlife of Rome and Berlin while recording. "Pop" is the most viscerally physical expression of that impulse; a sexy, explorative number with squelchy funk beats and lyrics that play out like blurry snapshots of the night before.
  • The album title doubles as a sort of lifestyle advice. On the Hits Radio Breakfast Show, Styles explained that "Kiss all the time, disco occasionally" is essentially a mantra: "It's unhealthy to disco all the time so loving and moving through your life with love and then taking a break every now and again to have some fun is a really good way to approach your life."

"Pop" is where that philosophy loosens its tie and heads for the dance floor. The bass bounces along with cheerful determination while the chorus practically insists that the human body cannot help but bop along with the beat.
  • The word "pop" carries notable weight in Styles' catalog. On "Cinema" from Harry's House he sings:

I bring the pop to the cinema
You pop when we get intimate

Fans have long debated whether "pop" refers to popcorn, pop stardom, or something more explicitly sexual. The word now has its own dedicated song, and Styles has essentially crystallized the double entendre into a title.
  • The track was written with regular collaborators Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, who also produced it. Adding extra lift is The House Gospel Choir; it's one of four songs on the album to feature the London group. Founded in London in 2011, the collective has grown to over 150 singers from a wide range of religious backgrounds. They previously joined Kylie Minogue on her Infinite Disco live album and also appeared on "Your House" by Inhaler - another track produced by Kid Harpoon.
