Songfacts®:

  • Here, Harry Styles uses the analogy of a satellite to describe a person he wants to get closer to. In the same way that satellites spin around the Earth because of our planet's gravitational pull, Styles is orbiting around this person as they prefer to keep him at a distance. The pop star sees they are lonely and wishes they pull him in closer so they can have a meaningful relationship.
  • Styles wrote "Satellite" with:

American record producer and songwriter Tyler Johnson. He wrote and produced Styles' 2017 debut self-titled solo album and all but two tracks on the singer's 2019 follow-up, Fine Line. Besides Styles, Keith Urban, Miley Cyrus, and Sam Smith are some other big names he has produced for.

English singer-songwriter and producer Tom "Kid Harpoon" Hull. After collaborating on two tracks on Harry Styles, Hull contributed towards all but one song on Fine Line. He has also worked with Florence + the Machine's on several of their hit singles, including "Shake It Out," "Never Let Me Go," and her hookup with Calvin Harris, "Sweet Nothing."
  • While Johnson and Hull played most of the instruments on "Satellite," Styles gets credited with keyboards. His only other instrumental contribution on Harry's House is glockenspiel on "As It Was" and "Keep Driving."
  • Harry Styles teamed up with Paris-based filmmaker Aube Perrie for the song's music video. The pair previously worked together for Styles' visual for "Music For A Sushi Restaurant."

The clip begins backstage of Harry Styles' Love On Tour in Los Angeles where an automatic vacuum cleaner named Stomper watches a Brian Cox-narrated broadcast of the Curiosity rover roaming around Mars all alone for over a decade. The vacuum sets off on his own adventure, searching for that sense of connection it knows Curiosity lacks up on Mars. We follow Stomper's journey as he travels across the country, facing many obstacles along the way. In the end, Stomper finds his connection when he re-unites with Styles, who's lying in the grass and stargazing.

The video is reminiscent of the 2008 film WALL-E, directed by Andrew Stanton.
