Songfacts®:

  • Hayden Thorpe had been the frontman of British rock group Wild Beasts for 15 years until the band's dissolution in 2017. Soon after the band decided to split, Thorpe headed to California, where he wrote his debut solo album Diviner.
  • The relief of completing Diviner is captured in "Impossible Object," the album's closing track. Thorpe described this soulful closer to Q Magazine as helping to give him perspective over the next chapter of his life. "'Impossible Object' is like a spiral staircase," he explained. "A shape you can't see all at once. You can only see the next bit when you get to the next bit. It's about the way we perceive time and the way we live, that we don't know the next bit is the next bit."
