Songfacts®:

  • "I Like the Way (The Kissing Game)" was written and produced by Teddy Riley, Bernard Belle, and David Way. It became Hi-Five's breakout charting single, leading to five more Top 40 hits on the Billboard charts in just three short years for the R&B group. The song is a great example of the New Jack Swing genre. This was during the peak years of the New Jack music movement, as well. Jive Records, a subsidiary of Sony Music, picked Hi-Five for some aggressive marketing and promotion.
  • This song has the distinction of being Billboard magazine's 1000th #1 single.
  • Tony Thompson was the lead vocalist for Hi-Five, which disbanded in 1994. Thompson went on to a solo career which was cut short in 2007 by his tragic death at age 31. Thompson was found outside an apartment near an exposed air conditioning unit, and his cause of death was determined to be toxic effects from inhaling a lethal amount of freon gas.
