Songfacts®:

  • When your good buddy gets married and has a family, it signals the end of the friendship as it was - the poker nights, concerts and other adventures will be few and far between. That's what happened to Hootie & the Blowfish lead singer Darius Rucker, who used it as the basis for this song, where he sings about how this friendship is destined to change.

Hannah Jane is actually the daughter of the friend. Her name sings very well.
  • The Hannah from this song ended up babysitting for some of the band members when they had kids. The progeny of drummer Mark Bryan and drummer Jim Sonefeld would often play together, and Hannah dubbed them "The Bronefelds."
  • This is the first song on Cracked Rear View, the uber-popular debut album for Hootie & the Blowfish. The band had been performing for a few years and made an EP called Kootchypop in 1993, but it took them a few days to find their footing during session for the album. According to Jim Sonefeld, everything meshed when they recorded this song on the third day. "It was a relief to let it all out - to emphatically reestablish with full confidence that we are a rock 'n' roll band," he wrote in the book Swimming With The Blowfish. "The nerves and anticipation that held us back the first few days finally melted away, leaving only joyful, musical satisfaction."
