Table Tennis Music

Album: Not released on an album (2012)

Songfacts®:

  • This instrumental track was played before every table tennis game at the London 2012 Olympics. Singer Alexis Taylor described it to Q magazine as "the walk-on music" for the players, adding they had an open brief: "It could be three minutes long or 20 minutes long" and it could be "instrumental or have words."
  • Synth player Joe Goddard asked if Hot Chip could be involved in the table tennis as he has a table in his garden and enjoys playing the game. He told Q that the instrumental was inspired by the organ music played at US baseball games, which speeds up the tempo every time it repeats to get spectators clapping along. "That is the kind of music table tennis seems to suggest," he said. "Playful, repetitive and bouncy patterns."
