Songfacts®:

  • Ima Robot is a Los Angeles-based dance-rock band fronted by Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. "Greenback Boogie," a groove about making lots of money, first appeared as a B-side on their third studio album, Another Man's Treasure, in 2010. The following year, it gained prominence as the theme song to the USA Network legal drama/comedy Suits, which ran for nine seasons. The show starred Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter, a high-powered corporate lawyer with a brilliant but problematic protégé whose secret threatens to destroy both their careers.
  • Kevin Bray, who directed the pilot episode of Suits, picked the theme song. According to Patrick J. Adams, who played Harvey's associate Mike Ross, Bray found the song while they were shooting the episode and played it on his phone.
  • Suits also starred Meghan Markle as Rachel Zane, a paralegal who falls for Mike Ross. Markle left the series in 2017 after becoming engaged to Prince Harry, a grandson of Queen Elizabeth II. During their post-wedding royal tour in 2018, the couple was welcomed to Auckland, New Zealand, by a brass band performing "Greenback Boogie."
  • The music video, directed by Frank Jerky, follows the exploits of various people visiting a network of dingy bathroom stalls. Aside from the obvious need to relieve themselves, others are shown vomiting, preparing drugs, beating people up, having sex, signing autographs, blowing bubbles, and eating food.
  • A year before Ima Robot released Another Man's Treasure, Ebert's other band, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, issued their first full-length album, Up From Below, which featured their popular song "Home."
